UGA Silences the Doubters as they roll to 31-3 Victory
As Georgia opened up their SEC play against the surging No. 17 Mississippi State, the crowd called for a blackout that many hoped would occur but unfortunately Coach Smart had the players wear their home red to show that they we’re all about business.
After Georgia won the opening toss, they deferred in order to receive the ball to start the 2nd half. In doing so, the Bulldogs wanted to set the tone of the game by putting their defense on the field to start.
After the defense forced Mississippi State into a 3 and out, the offense came on the field. OC Jim Chaney lined them up to show a running play but instead tricked MSU and called a flea flicker that was run to perfection. Jake Fromm took the snap and handed the ball off to Nick Chubb who tossed it back and Fromm chucked the ball down the field to Terry Godwin for a 59 yard TD to start the game! Little did everyone know but that play set the tone for the whole way MSU would approach the game. As many Georgia fans know, the Defense is the heart and soul of our team but tonight the most important group would have to be the Offensive Line! After having some difficulty pushing the line the last few weeks, they completely manhandled the MSU defense.
After the TD, MSU took the ball and once again had some trouble moving down the field. Following the punt by MSU, Georgia, riding the hot hand of Jake Fromm, moved down the field again on a 8 play 78 yard drive that resulted in a 7 yard Nick Chubb TD to put the Dawgs up 14-0! A last minute drive by MSU gave them a 26 yard field goal for 3 points that put them into a 14-3 whole, going into halftime.
To open the 2nd half, the Georgia Bulldogs continued their offensive tear and conducted a 7 play 90 yard TD drive that once again ended with a Nick Chubb rushing TD. The Georgia Defense, like they have done all year, has contained rushing QB’s and forcing them to throw from the pocket and MSU’s QB, Nick Fitzgerald was unable to move the ball.
When the Georgia defense continually stopped MSU drives, Chaney was able to open up the playbook and allowed Fromm to throw the ball all around the field that resulted in yet another long TD pass courtesy of Isaac Nauta to put them up 28-3. All night the Offensive Line made it known that they were not going to back off and caused the MSU defense to not be able to tackle the running backs in the trenches.
Georgia DC Mel Tucker, sensing the game was almost too far out for MSU to mount a comeback, dialed up some plays that pressured Fitzgerald to throw into traffic giving UGA’s Deandre Baker and Malkom Parrish interceptions and put the game away for good! Rodrigo Blankenship was able to score the last points of the game with a career tying 49 yard field goal to make the score 31-3
With this victory, the Georgia Bulldogs win a 2nd BIG time game and move to 4-0 on the season. Next week they travel to Neyland Stadium to face the Tennessee Volunteers who have lost to Florida and had trouble putting away UMass in back to back weeks.
Game is set to start at 3:30 pm.
