With 2/3 of the season in the books and UGA at a surprising 8-0, the Bulldogs await for ESPN to announce the first College Football Playoff Rankings at 7pm. To start the year UGA was projected to win a total of 8-9 games with a 11% chance of winning the conference, but that quickly changed.
After UGA defeated Notre Dame in South Bend (20-19), and then blowing out a Mississippi State team that was thought to be unstoppable (31-3). The rankings began to favor UGA and moved them up week in and week out. Not only did UGA show that they were a different team under 2nd year Coach Kirby Smart but they went into Knoxville and made the Tennessee Volunteers quit (41-0). With the resume building quite nicely, the Bulldogs continued to grind and defeat teams at a staggering rate. Following the 1 point victory over Notre Dame, UGA began destroying teams by a minimum of 20 points on their way to a #2 ranking and a 8-0 season record.
As the Bulldogs continued to look dominate on the daily, no game was quite as impressive from a Bulldog fan’s point of view as much as the 42-7 victory over Florida this past Saturday. The Bulldogs overpowered the Gators not only offensively but defensively as well. After losing the past 3 years, Coach Smart made it a priority to make a point and run up the score.
Now sitting at 8-0, the Bulldogs are projected to win 11 games and have a 36% to win the conference.
At 7pm, the Playoff Committee announced the first rankings of 2017. In doing so, UGA was placed in the #1 spot.
As the rankings were announced, Coach Smart has continually said that “humility is one week away” and that “the rankings don’t matter, it matters how we finish.” With Coach Smart keeping his team focused, look for UGA to come out and play hard grown man football on Saturday vs South Carolina. Game #9 is set to be played at Sanford Stadium at 3:30pm vs South Carolina Gamecocks (6-2).
