UGA jumps to #6 in 5th CFP Rankings of 2017 Season
In the final game of the regular season for college football, many ranked teams (with their eyes set on a playoff spot), faltered and lost important games, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy.
On Friday night, the 1st upset and playoff hopeful, the #2 Miami Hurricanes fell to an unranked Pitt team 24-14 and now await the 2nd to last CFP rankings. With a matchup with rival Clemson Tigers in the ACC Championship, the Hurricanes must win that game in order to make the CFP.
Although that upset was surprising, none was as surprising to fans and the committee as #1 Alabama fell to #6 Auburn 26-14 and were knocked out of the SEC Championship matchup with Georgia. Now that Alabama will not be playing in the Championship, they must rely on the committee in order to get back into the top 4.
#7 Georgia defeated Georgia Tech 38-7, after their only blemish in their great season being a loss to Auburn 3 weeks ago, now look to the committee to place them in the top 6 spots in order to have a shot at the playoff. Even though Georgia looks to be in a good position for a CFP run, their 1st test will be a rematch with the only team to beat them this year in the SEC Championship. If Georgia is able to win the SEC Championship they will most definitely be in the CFP.
At 7:00pm Tuesday night, the CFP Rankings were released and Georgia gained some ground and moved into the #6 spot. With Auburn moving up as well to the # 2 spot, and Albama dropping to #5 spot, the SEC Championship looks to be one for the ages. the winner takes the SEC title and a CFP spot!
SEC Championship is set for December 2nd 4:00pm at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia
