Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos makes 1st move, trades closer Jim Johnson to Angels
One year after the Braves gave closer, Jim Johnson, a 2 year extension, they have traded him to the Los Angeles Angels after a poor 2017 outing. After Johnson boasted a 3.06 ERA in 64 innings of relief in 2016, he fell off the deep end in 2017 with a 5.56 ERA.
Johnson had difficulty with his command allowing a career high 8 HR’s and blowing 16 saves. In the 1st move for newly acquired GM, Alex Anthopoulos, he struck a deal with the Angels and traded Johnson for minor league LHP Justin Kelly.
Kelly moves from A to AAA throughout the 2017 season and had 6-4 record with a 3.53 ERA. With Kelly on the verge of the majors, the Braves were able to trade away a veteran with some command trouble and get a up and comer in return.
