UGA Baseball Starts Fast and Wins Game #1 vs Charlotte 12-2
By. Andrew Rodberg
Following a 14-4 blowout win vs Kennesaw State, the Dawgs headed back home to Foley Field to face a 3-1 Charlotte 49er’s team. After seeing how the 49er’s battled #12 NC State earlier in the week, the Dawgs were determined to start fast and apply pressure early.
With that being said, the Dawgs continued to ride the hot bat of OF Keegan McGovern who had hit home-runs in back to back games coming into today’s contest and his bat didn’t cool down! In the bottom of the 1st inning, Keegan opened up the scoring with a solo shot to right field, making it 3 in the past 3 games and giving the Dawgs a 1-0 lead.
With UGA starting pitcher, Kevin Smith holding onto the lead, the Dawgs continued to get runners on base and finally with the bases loaded, the Dawgs converted 3 consecutive singles to extend their lead to 5-0 in the 2nd inning. At this point, Smith was able to become more aggressive with his pitch selection, knowing that the 49er’s were going to swing at everything.
After Smith secured the 5-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings, the Dawgs ultimately sealed the victory after yet another big inning! The 3rd inning scoring barade came courtesy of a 3 run home-run by INF LJ Talley and a 2 run home-run by OF Tucker Bradley that gave the Dawgs a 10-0 lead after 3 innings.
Following a 5 inning performance and a 10-1 lead, Kevin Smith took a seat and watched as his impressive bullpen went to work. From the 5th-9th innings the Dawgs bullpen gave up only 2 hits and 1 run as the Dawgs went on to win the game 12-2.
Looking ahead:
The Dawgs now look ahead to a double-header on Saturday as expected weather is forecasted to hit on Sunday. Game #2 will be played at 1:00 pm followed by a 45 minute break in-between the start of Game #3.
