Following a 6-4 Game #3 win and a 45 minute recess, the Dawgs took the field once more to start the 2nd game of the double-header. In doing so, the Dawgs sent pitcher, Chase Adkins to the mound to finish the sweep. Adkins got into some trouble early after hitting the first batter he faced and giving up a single to follow. With the 49er’s desperate to win a game, they sent the base runner to second on a steal and he was caught with a pick off resulting in the end of the 1st inning. In the bottom of the 1st, the Dawgs made it known that they were warmed up and ready to play when they created a single, drew two walks, and Aaron Schunk sent a ball flying into center field for a double to give the Dawgs a 3-0 lead.
Chase Adkins began to settle down and was able to work around a lead-off double to start the 2nd inning that resulted in no runs for the 49er’s, but unfortunately for the 49er’s the Dawgs were not going to take their foot of the gas. With yet another multi-run inning for the home team that started by 2 walks and 2 singles in the bottom of the 2nd, the Dawgs lead grew to 5-0. In the 3rd a sac-fly by Tucker Maxwell pushed the lead to 6-0.
More of the same results came in 3rd inning for the 49er’s offensively after they continued to strikeout and weren’t able to get enough runners on base. That was until the 4th inning when they were able to make the most of their opportunity after a single and HBP that finally put them on the scoreboard 1-6.
But as many people are slowly starting to figure out, UGA senior OF, Keegan McGovern will not be denied! After being held in check in Game #3, he exploded in the 4th with a monster solo home-run over the right field wall to make the score 1-7. Yet another small ball run for the 49er’s came in the 5th courtesy of a sac-fly to center field to make the score 2-7.
Following 5 innings, UGA went to their bullpen after Chase Adkins went 5 innings, 5 hits, gave up 2 runs and 1 strike-out. The bullpen did it’s job in the 6th after not giving up a single hit. In the bottom of the 6th, Keegan McGovern came up to the plate and smashed another home-run to center field and not just earning 1 RBI but instead 2 to make it a 9-2 score (McGovern has hit 5 home runs over the past 5 games after only hitting 2 all season in 2017).
In the 7th-9th innings is when the UGA bullpen began to become suspect after a pass ball in the 7th gave the 49er’s a run to make it 3-9, followed by 2 singles and a double in the 8th that made the score 6-9 and a lot more reasonable for the 49er’s to overcome.
BUT…
Keegan McGovern made sure that comeback was going to come too late, when he hit his 3RD HOME-RUN OF THE GAME to center field to make it a 10-6 game and officially putting the nation on notice after his 6 home-runs in 5 games!
A single, walk and another single gave the 49er’s another run in the 9th inning but at this point it was too late. Keegan McGovern and the Dawgs had completed the sweep and moved to 6-1 on the season!
Looking ahead:
The Dawgs now look ahead to a matchup on Tuesday night with the 3-3 Wofford College Terriers who have won 2 straight games. Game is set to start at 5pm in Athens,GA
