On Tuesday afternoon, the Braves welcomed the Pittsburgh Pirates to Champion Stadium in Orlando, FL for a 1:05pm game. In doing so, the Braves sent pitcher, Mike Foltynewicz to the mound to face the Pirates pitcher, Steven Brault.
With the day’s lineups being released, Freddie Freeman, Ender Inciarte and Nick Markakis all received their 2nd start of the 2018 Spring Training schedule.
Mike Folynewicz comes into 2018 spring training after an up and down 2017 season where he gave up a career high 20 HR’s but also drastically improved his strike-outs from 111 in 2016 to 143 in 2017. Folty makes his 1st start of the 2018 ST with hopes of keeping the ball down and not allowing batters to scorch him all over the field.
In the 1st inning Folty retired the side with a ground-out, fouled-out and a fly-out. In the 2nd inning, is when Folty got into some trouble. After issuing 2 consecutive walks, the Pirates began to pressure Folty with runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs. Luckily, Folty was able to get out of the inning courtesy of a double-play ground ball and a fly out which ended his afternoon.
The Braves then turned to relief pitcher, Chase Whitley in the 4th inning who instantly had trouble commanding his pitches and hit his first batter and then gave up back to back doubles to let the Pirates build a 2-0 lead. The Braves were determined to not allow the Pirates to run away with the game. In doing so, they were able to respond with a 2 run 4th themselves courtesy of a single, walk and a double to tie the game at 2-2.
From that point on, the game was a back and forth battle that resulted in yet another lead change in the top of the 7th when the Pirates struck again with an RBI double to give them a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, the Braves tied it back up once again with a solo home-run courtesy of Johan Camargo on a one pitch at bat to make the score 3-3.
After that home-run neither team would surrender another score. The Braves bullpen gave up 1 hit in the final 2 innings whereas the Pirates bullpen didn’t give up a single hit and the game ended in a draw.
