Following a rain out vs Georgia State on Wednesday, the Dawgs traveled to South Carolina to embark in a 5 games in 5 days away trip. In doing so, the Dawgs faced the College of Charleston Cougars in a 3 game series that started today at 6:00pm. The Dawgs sent pitcher Kevin Smith to the mound to face Charleston’s Evan Sisk.
In the 1st inning, Smith was able to strike-out two batters but in the 2nd and 3rd innings things got out of hand. After giving up a walk and 2 singles in the 2nd, the Cougars got out to a 1-0 lead and the scoring didn’t stop there…
In the 3rd, the Cougars had a lead-off single followed by a RBI triple and RBI double to push their lead to 3-0. With the Dawgs used to being the aggressors, they attacked the pitcher but unfortunately Cougar’s Sisk was on fire. Sisk was able to limit the Dawgs offense by keeping Keegan McGovern, Cam Shepherd and Michael Curry at bay.
Completely shutting down the Dawgs for 5 innings, Sisk fell into some trouble in the 6th when Tucker Bradley had a lead-off single and advanced to third on throwing errors. Michael Curry also got to first on a throwing error that scored Bradley. Aaron Schunk then hit a RBI triple to cut into the Cougar’s lead 2-3.
In the bottom of the 6th, the Cougars had an answer…
The Dawgs looked to Tony Locey who issued 2 consecutive walks to start the 6th, to put runners in 1st and 2nd. A sac bunt and a ground-out gave the Cougars a 4-2 lead. The scoring stopped until the bottom of the 8th when the Cougars sealed the win with a RBI single to give them a 5-2 victory.
Looking ahead:
The Dawgs now have a Game #2 matchup with the Cougars at 2:00 pm on Saturday. The Cougars are 8-2 after winning their previous 5 games. The Dawgs will look to snap that streak and start their own.
