Johan Camargo leads the way as the Braves beat the Pirates 7 -5
By.Andrew Rodberg
Following a 5-2 victory over Miami yesterday as previously written in Freddie Freeman continues to rake as Braves beat Marlins 5-2
The Braves remained at home as they took on the Pittsburgh Pirates. In the 11th game of spring training, the Braves sent newly acquired Brandon McCarthy to the mound to battle Pirates Chad Kuhl.
In the 1st and 2nd innings, both McCarthy and Kuhl worked clean innings and didn’t allow any runs. That was until the Braves got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd courtesy of 4 consecutive singles by Danny Santana, Ender Inciarte, Ozzie Albies and Johan Camargo to give the Braves a 3-0 lead after 3.
In the top of the 4th, the Braves sent McCarthy once again to the mound where he continued to dominate until he made a mistake and left a pitch over the plate and Sterling Marte smashed it over the left field wall to get the Pirates on the board at 1-3.
The Braves went cold in the 4th inning but warmed back up in the 5th when Ozzie Albies drew a walk, Johan Camargo hit a single, Ronald Acuna was hit by a pitch and Christian Colon lined a double to left field to score 3 more runs and give the Braves a 6-1 lead.
After the 5th inning, both teams made their lineup changes and that is when the game got interesting. In doing so, the Braves sent Jose Ramirez to the mound to work the 6th inning. Ramirez was able to strike out the first batter he faced but fell victim to the long ball when former Brave, Sean Rodriguez hit a solo home-run to left center field to close the deficit to 2-6.
Once again both offenses went stagnant from innings 6 and 7 but in the 8th, the Pirates cut into the Braves lead when Max Moroff hit a solo home-run off of Daniel Winkler but this time the Braves responded. Danny Santana who spent some time in the majors last year is trying to make the active roster and in doing so, he helped himself with a solo home-run to push the Braves lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the 8th.
In the 9th inning is when things got really dicey for the Braves as they sent Rex Brothers to the mound to close out the game. Brothers instantly fell into trouble when he gave up a home-run and then 3 consecutive walks allowing the Pirates to climb right back into the game with a 2 run 9th inning. Fortunately for the Braves, they had a big enough lead to hold on and secure their 3rd straight spring training victory.
Key Players:
Danny Santana: 4-4 1 RBI
Johan Camargo: 2-4 2 RBI
Mike Foltynewicz: 3.2 innings, 3 hits, 1ER 1 W
Looking Ahead:
The Braves now head to Dunedin, Fl to face the Toronto Blue Jays tomorrow afternoon at 1:07pm.
