In what looked to be a good game in Atlanta, quickly turned sour. With the rain coming and going and temperature dropping at an alarming rate, the Dawgs sent Tim Elliott to the mound to face GT’s Amos Willingham.
The Dawgs made their presence known in the first inning as they racked up two runs courtesy of three doubles. The Yellow Jackets then countered by scoring a run themselves. In the bottom of the first, Aaron Schunk overthrew the first baseman on a routine ground ball and allowed GT to get the base runner they needed to start their evening.
Following the first inning, both Elliott and Willingham controlled the opposing lineups on their way to three clean innings a piece . That was until Elliott ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth that became an early departure for him. He ended his day with 4.1 IP, 2 hits, 2 runs, 1 ER and 7 strike-outs.
The Dawgs then turned to their bullpen, and no one could seem to find the strike-zone as GT ran up a six-run fifth inning. Courtesy of three home runs, the Yellow Jackets flexed their muscles and began their rout that gave them a 7-2 lead after five.
This season, Georgia had been able to respond after giving up a lead or multiple runs but Georgia Tech had other plans. In the top of the sixth, the Dawgs went down in order and then Georgia Tech followed up their previous inning with another 4 runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 11-2.
The rain continued to pour and in the top of the seventh, the umpiring crew called the game at 11-2.
With this loss Georgia drops to 21-4 and looks ahead to a three-game road trip to Lexington, KY to face the Kentucky Wildcats. Game #1 of the series begins on Thursday night at 7:00pm.
