ATHENS, Georgia — Early inning runs and Locey’s shutdown outing, led the Dawgs to a huge win over Mercer 13-3.

In the first UGA game of the 2019 NCAA D1 Regional, the Dawgs sent out Tony Locey to face his old HS teammate, Mercers’ Tanner Hall. With Mercer looking to make some noise this postseason, they were unable to get anything going in the first few innings. As for the Dawgs, they had no trouble getting to Hall and putting a huge lead on the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, Tucker Maxwell got things started with a leadoff double, followed by a FULL lineup appearance.

Allowing the Dawgs to build a 8-0 lead (1st inning) with Tony Locey dealing through the Mercer batting order.

After the 8 runs, the Mercer Bears had to turn to their bullpen and went  through 3 pitchers in 4 innings of work.

Locey returned to the mound in the 2nd and didn’t allow the Bears to get anything going,  (set down 9 of his first 10 batters) and helped Georgia keep their huge lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Dawgs broke through with another big inning (5 runs), courtesy of

Home-Run by Aaron Schunk (2nd of the game) to extend the lead to 13-0.

With the 13 run lead, Locey became comfortable and had everything going through the first 5 innings as he gave up 3 hits, 1 walk and 7 strikeouts on his way to a 11th win of 2019.

Following Locey’s 5 innings, the Dawgs turned to Logan Moody to work the 6th and 7th. Moody had some trouble controlling his pitches which resulted in him walking 3 batters through 2 innings. The Bears were able to get on the scoreboard in the top of the 7th after 2 walks. Kyle Dockus hit a 3-run homer over the left field wall to cut the lead to 13-3.

With UGA holding on to a 10-run lead, they put their trust in their bullpen who led them to victory. The Dawgs used 2 relief pitchers who only gave up a combined 4 hits in 4 IP. With this win, the Dawgs are officially in the winner’s bracket and will face Florida State tomorrow night at 7:00pm.

Key Positives:

The pitching came in clutch and showed up when the Dawgs needed a strong start to the Regional.
