ATHENS, Georgia- Cam Shepherd and Tim Elliott lead the way as Dawgs shutout FAU 13-0.
In the first elimination game for UGA in the 2019 NCAA D1 Regional, the Dawgs turned to Tim Elliott to face the Owls’ Mike Ruff.
With UGA the designated visiting team yet again, the Dawgs got base-runners on all afternoon. The Dawgs threatened in the first two innings but didn’t break through until the top of the third. Following a lead-off walk to Tucker Maxwell (a steal followed), Aaron Schunk got ahold of a ball left over the plate and sent it deep to left-field for a 2-0 lead.
Elliott knowing he needed to give the Dawgs a long and effective outing, did exactly that! He cruised through the first 4 innings, as he had a no hitter going until a single ended the streak in the 4th.. With Elliott holding a 5-0 lead through 4 innings (3-run homer by Connor Tate) he continued to pound the strike-zone and work much needed innings.
A solo homer by Cam Shepherd in the 6th inning ended Ruff’s afternoon. His outing was completed after 5IP, 7H’s, 6R’s, 3BB’s and 5K’s. O’Connor then came in to follow and work the middle innings.
Elliott continued to work a pitch count minimum, while completely shutting down the Owls’ offense.
More runs came in the form of a homer, this time courtesy of John Cable, (2-run homer) in the top of the 7th to push the lead to 9-0.
More late inning magic extended the lead to 13-0 in the 8th inning as Aaron Schunk hit a grand slam.
As Elliott continued to impose his will, the Dawgs couldn’t help but send him out for more late inning work. With the Dawgs really needing to preserve their bullpen arms, UGA was able to play the entire game behind Elliott who put on a clinic.
Elliott was able to pitch a complete game, the first since May 5th 2017 vs UAB.
Elliott’s final line: 9IP, 2H’s, 0R, 0BB, 8K’s
The Dawgs now have a 6:00pm matchup with FSU and will look for revenge after a poor showing last night.
