ATHENS, GA— In the Hoop Dawgs second game of the 2019-2020 season, they welcomed the Citadel to Athens, GA. With a 7:00pm start, the Georgia faithful looked forward to seeing freshman Anthony Edwards take the stage once again. After a 24 point career debut game vs WCU, Edwards looked to build off that and help the Dawgs win their 2nd straight. On Tuesday night, the Dawgs took the lead early and were determined to not give it up. With that being said, the Citadel refused to be blown out they got down by as much as eight points in the first half but continued to stay within distance behind their seven made three pointers. As the first half came to an end, Edwards had 10 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists (a slow start in his book) as the Dawgs held a 48-40 halftime lead.
Key Contributors at Half:
Amanze Ngumezi: 10 pts
Anthony Edwards: 10 pts
Dawgs were able to get to the line for 17 free throws and made 10:17
In the second half, a game inside the game developed as Anthony Edwards and Citadel’s Hayden Brown went back and forth with scoring opportunities. Every time Edwards would make a play it seemed as though Brown would answer with a one of his own, mostly a three pointer, as he went 4-8 and helped the Citadel stay in the game until the final 2 minutes. With the second half heating up with back and forth scoring, so did Anthony Edwards. Edwards caught fire and made up for his slow start with a 19 point second half that gave him a new career high 29 points. Although he led the team in scoring, his play was not what ultimately helped the Dawgs secure the win. That headline goes to the other Georgia freshman, Sahvir Wheeler, who took over towards the end of the game and went on a run. It seemed like every play was being run through his hands and he was able to rattle off 4 points, 4 assists and help the Dawgs build a much needed lead after the Citadel cut the lead to 1. The Dawgs were able to clamp down defensively, along with some uncharacteristic missed free throws by Hayden Brown, gave the Dawgs a 95-86 victory.
