ATHENS, GA— Following a 2-0 start to the 2019-2020 season, the Dawgs remained at home and welcomed Delaware State to Athens, GA on Friday night. With a 7:00pm start, the Georgia faithful packed the Coliseum once again. At first tip, the Dawgs got right to business behind their big man, Rayshaun Hammonds who gave Delaware State some serious trouble inside the paint. With his 6’9″ frame, Delaware State had no answer for Hammonds as he was imposing his will. As the half continued to develop, it was evident that the main focus was to get the ball into the paint and they did just that as they built a 20 point lead going into the half… 50-30.
Key Contributors at Half:
Rayshaun Hammonds: 17 pts, 7 rebounds (leading team in both at half)
Mike Peake: 4 pts (first career minutes)
In the second half, the Dawgs went right back to what had been working all night and kept feeding the ball to the hot hand. Hammonds continued to do his thing and another Georgia big, Amanze Ngumezi ,wanted to join in on the fun. Ngumenzi rattled off 6 points in two minutes and began to stuff his stat sheet as well. With Hammonds on a roll, Edwards wasn’t needed to have a big game which resulted in a lot of other players getting involved. One of those players turned out to be Tyree Crump (senior) who began draining threes at a high rate. With everything working for the Dawgs, the guards began to notice the size difference and exposed Delaware State. The guards changed their focus to moving the ball (instead of forcing up shots) that opened up easy buckets, long range shots, and a huge lead that continued to be extended. The game was far out of reach for Delaware State and Tom Crean and co. subbed in a lot of players. In doing so, almost every single player scored which made this a great team win. As the final buzzer blew, the scoreboard read 100-66 for the Dawgs 3rd victory of 2019.
