ATHENS, GA—Following a disappointing outing vs Dayton 24 hours ago, the Dawgs returned to the court to battle the #3 Michigan State Spartans in the 1st game of the consolation bracket. With a 2:30pm tip-off, the Dawgs came out with more fire as Anthony Edwards started in the 1 hole while setting the offense up. In doing so, the Dawgs were able to keep up with the feisty Spartans in a competitive game. But quickly things got out of hand as the Dawgs went 1-6 from three and the Spartans went 4-4 and built a 18 point lead with 7 minutes left in the first half.
Although the play slowed, the Dawgs couldn’t handle the ball movement, transition offense and three point shooting from Michigan State (which continues to be a huge issue when it comes to staying in games). The Dawgs since arriving in Maui, sadly don’t look like the same team that started off the season playing good fundamental basketball. They struggle to stop opposing teams in transition, have gone cold from three and are having difficulty getting offensive rebounds. As the inexperience continued to be a factor the Dawgs weren’t able to get Rayshaun Hammonds the ball consistently which allowed Michigan State to attack the paint and build a 52-31 lead at halftime.
Key Contributors at Half:
Rayshaun Hammonds: 8 pts, 3 rebounds, 2 assists
Tyree Crump: 7 pts, 4 rebounds
Anthony Edwards: 4 pts
In the second half, Michigan continued to pad their already big lead, that was until Anthony Edwards caught fire. The Spartans lead grew to 28 points before Tom Crean went to zone defense and everything began to change. The Dawgs were able to get into transition which resulted in easy buckets and Edwards started draining threes. A once huge lead got down to 9 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the game. Edwards (after 9 total points in 3 halves), went off in the second half as he had 20 points in the first 10 minutes and didn’t show any signs of slowing down. The Spartans had no answer for Edwards as they began to “sweat” so to speak. With all momentum on Georgia’s side, they began to feed off the crowd and ride the hot hand of Edwards. With just under 8 minutes left, it was time for the Georgia defense to tighten up and try to mount this huge comeback as the lead got down to as low as 2 points. Edwards continued to do his thing as he had 33 points in the second half but it was too little too late as the Spartans were able to get just enough stops to halt the huge Georgia comeback on their way to a 93-85 victory.
