Suzuki’s 2 homers seal the victory as Braves hold on for sweep after 12 innings
On the final game in Oakland before heading home for a three game series with the NL leading Houston Astros, the Braves sent Julio Teheran to the mound to give Atlanta a chance at the sweep.
Julio started off the day with a very strong high fastball that caused the Athletics to strikeout a total of eight times in six innings of work. Julio threw a gem as Kurt Suzuki hit a no-doubt home run to lead off the second inning followed by a double by NL All-Star Ender Inciarte, putting the Braves up 2-0, that would ultimately hold on until the beginning of the 7th inning.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, Teheran began to have some trouble, giving up a solo home run to Khris Davis that cut the lead to 2-1, followed by a single and a walk causing the Braves bullpen to take over. Jason Motte took the mound and gave up a sacrifice fly allowing the Athletics to tie the game.
Both the Athletics and Braves Bullpen’s preformed well, but after multiple lead changes, the Braves broke through with yet another home run by Kurt Suzuki in the 12th giving the Braves the victory and sweep.
The Braves have come on strong this past week and have pulled within one game below .500 with a 40-41 season record and 7 games back from the Nationals.
The Braves have a day off tomorrow and return to action against the Astros on July 4th where they will send rookie Sean Newcomb (1-2 1.48 ERA) to the mound to face Astros Brad Peacock (5-1 2.72 ERA)
Game is set to begin at 7:35 pm ET
